AELIAN° (Claudius Aelianus; c. 170–235 C.E.), Greek sophist. Aelian mentions the Jews in several places. In Varia Historia, 12, 35, he includes the Jewish Sibyls (see apocalypse ) in a list of sibylline oracles. In his De Natura Animalium, 6, 17, he tells of a snake enamored of a girl in Judea during the reign of Herod. He also mentions the deer on Mount Carmel.
